MMMF identification.

Various man-made mineral fibres (MMMF) have been shown to be real or suspected carcinogens. Identification is therefore important when these materials are employed or processed.

MMMFs are examined by X-ray microanalysis using electron microscopes. In addition, it is possible to determine the KI index (carcinogenicity index) and RF value (respirable fraction) of an MMMF using the "artificial mineral fibres" protocol, which serves to determine which level of protection should be applied during the removal or application of these materials.
